Abstract

In this paper the author separates the question of value into four distinct questions: what are values? Are values objective or subjective? Which are the fundamental types of values? What is the hierarchy of values !ike and what is the highest value within a humanistic and democratic social theory? ln the second part of the paper the author discusses some aspects of the quality of life as they are presented in various philosophical traditions. The author underlines the fact that it is the productive activity 'praxis' that predominantly provides .the high quality of life. 'Praxis' is defined as that special kind of activity that is primarily free i.e. when an individua! autonomously makes decisions about the goal, means and regulations ofthe activity.
